Jump the Gun – Brighton

This post is part of our guide to Modernism – a slowly collected group of articles about fashion, furniture and related topics.

Jump the Gun is a small shop in Brighton, a town in the south of England, synonymous with mod due to the Untouchables weekenders and of course the rather heated exchanges between mods and rockers in the sixties that inspired the film Quadrophenia.  I remember visiting the shop in 2008, simply standing their in awe at the quality of stock they had.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have two pennies to rub together, but I didn’t forget the store and have now purchased a number of items from them.  What appealed to me at the time, and still does, is that they didn’t rest on stocking one brand or the most common of the mod brands, but selected the best of other brands and combined them with products they had made themselves. For instance they stock the best and most distinct of the Fred Perry range, but none of the garish things FP can come out with when they team up with “designers”.

Their own brand of sta-prest trouser is second-to-none. Ensure you get your sizing right and you’ll be as happy as Larry with them. They also do their own run of shirts, both long and short sleeve, harringtons, suits as well as monkey boots and boots from the original factory of a more famous brand that decided to move their operations out of England.

They also a offer a very competitive price on Loake loafers and brogues, and because of their outstanding customer service – quick e-mail replies and delivery of goods to Australia sometimes within a week – I’ve decided to go with JTG even though they don’t remove the VAT like some others. The little touches – the pack of JTG matches or the measuring tape – show a distinct awareness of the little things capping off the mod style.

Westbury Modern – Rozelle

It’s terrific when you come across previously undiscovered gems – it may be a little back street pub or record shop that has an unusually large section of Jamaican vinyl.  Rarely in Sydney do you come across a whole shop or, in this case, showroom.  I came across Westbury Modern while working over at Sydney College of the Arts on the Callan Park site.  It’s perhaps the most unassuming showroom – the old front of a shop on a busy road with a house and workshop behind it.  It does make sense to be so close to SCA: the library has an awesome collection of mid-century books and films.

Without actually having been inside (Saturday is the only opening time – though you can find the cabinet maker around the back), the LP wall brackets look cool on the cheaper end of the scale, while the Oswald sofa is something to behold – and fairly reasonable priced between 600-700 dollars (from memory). The showroom doesn’t offer a huge range of things, but there is always the custom option.  See more at the website: http://www.westburymodern.com.au
